Spring Racing Season 2025

Spring racing season is just around the corner, and whether you’re heading trackside at Eagle Farm or settling in for a Melbourne Cup long lunch at one of Brisbane’s favourites like Persone, it’s the perfect excuse to suit up, feel your best, and enjoy the day in style. Here are some styling tips from Mark Ferguson, director of Wil Valor.

Dress for the Day (and the Weather). Spring in Brisbane can be warm and humid, so lightweight, breathable fabrics are key. Italian linen, cotton-linen blends and soft wool-silk mixes strike the right balance, and they hold their shape without weighing you down. Stick to lighter colours like sage green, soft blue, beige, or even dusty pink. These not only nod to the season but also help reflect the sun and keep you cooler. You can wear navy to work, why not have some fun.

Ditch the standard white shirt and opt for something with a subtle pattern or texture — think micro-checks, fine stripes, or a soft contrast collar for something different.

Possibly controversial… go for no tie if the dress code allows. Open collar with a crisp shirt and tailored jacket gives an effortless, modern look. If you are going with a tie, try a knitted texture for a relaxed spring feel and something different! Shoes matter. Leave the office lace-ups at home and consider a smart loafer or monk strap. Tan or chocolate suede is perfect for spring and pairs beautifully with lighter suits. Melbourne Cup Day is your moment to have a bit more fun. A soft check, pastel jacket, or playful pocket square can show personality without going full peacock. Just make sure your colours and tones complement your partner if you’re attending as a pair. For women, a beautifully tailored suit or modern jumpsuit is a refreshing alternative to a dress.
